Fashion; A Language of Art
Aligning with New York Fashion Week on September 8th, The Surrey explores the similitude between art and fashion as the two industries enter a new dynamic. Over the past century, fashion has become a language of art, as artists adapt the subject into new mediums of expression. Art historian and expert Natasha Schlesinger, founder of ArtMuse, transforms our lobby yet again with an exclusively curated fall exhibit: Fashioning Art.
The Surrey’s painting, “Study for Sneakerlace” by pop artist Claus Oldenburg, sets the exhibit’s tone as centerpiece and inspiration for exploring the language of fashion within art. Oldenburg’s muted grey strokes define the laces of white sneakers abstractly faded into the background setting the exhibit’s intentions to study the impulsive human desire to implement fashion into daily life.
Works by the following artists displayed in the exhibit will be available for purchase.
